Stargazer beantwoordt één vraag: hoe helder is de hemel vanavond. Je vult een Belgische gemeente in en de site zet live bewolking, de stand van de maan en de lichtvervuiling van die plek om in één score van 0 tot 100. Gebouwd op anonieme vraag, en precies het soort opgave waar we sterk in zijn: van losse data een antwoord maken dat een mens in één seconde begrijpt.Stargazer answers one question: how clear is the sky tonight. You enter a Belgian municipality and the site turns live cloud cover, the position of the moon and the light pollution of that spot into a single score from 0 to 100. Het weerbericht zegt iets over wolken, een maankalender zegt iets over de maan, en voor lichtvervuiling moet je een kaart opzoeken die niets van vanavond weet. The forecast says something about clouds, a moon calendar says something about the moon, and for light pollution you look up a map that knows nothing about tonight. De opdracht was dus niet om nog een weerpagina te maken, maar om die drie factoren tegen elkaar af te wegen en er één getal van te maken. De score bestaat uit drie delen: de bewolking weegt voor vijftig punten, de maanverlichting voor dertig, en de lichtvervuiling van de locatie voor twintig. Bewolking is de zwaarste factor omdat ze alles beslist, de maan komt daarna, en de lichtvervuiling ligt vast per plek maar bepaalt wel wat je überhaupt kunt zien.The score has three parts: cloud cover carries fifty points, moon illumination thirty, and the light pollution of the location twenty. Cloud cover weighs heaviest because it decides everything, the moon comes next, and light pollution is fixed per spot but sets the ceiling on what you can see at all.Le score comporte trois parties : la couverture nuageuse pèse cinquante points, l'éclairage lunaire trente, et la pollution lumineuse du lieu vingt. Belangrijker dan de formule is het venster waarop ze rekent. The site does not average across the full day, but across the real night window: from roughly eighty minutes after sunset to eighty minutes before sunrise, an approximation of astronomical twilight. Voor bewolking en zonnestanden bestaan open bronnen. Voor lichtvervuiling per coördinaat bestaat geen gratis dienst. In plaats van die factor te laten vallen, hebben we hem zelf berekend: elke lichtbron in de buurt draagt bij aan de hemelgloed volgens inwonersaantal gedeeld door de afstand tot de macht 2,5, de klassieke benadering van Walker.Open sources exist for cloud cover and sun positions. For light pollution per coordinate, no free service exists. Instead of dropping that factor, we computed it ourselves: every nearby light source contributes to the skyglow as population divided by distance to the power 2.5, the classic Walker approximation.Pour les nuages et la position du soleil, des sources ouvertes existent. The thresholds are calibrated against places whose class is known: Brussels lands on nine, Ghent on eight, the Kalmthoutse Heide on five, Botrange and the Gaume on four. Alles draait bij de bezoeker in de browser. Er is geen server die ertussen zit, geen databank en geen enkele API-sleutel, wat de site goedkoop houdt om te draaien en makkelijk om te onderhouden. Wat opgehaald wordt, komt van open weerdata; wat berekend kan worden, wordt berekend.Everything runs in the visitor's browser. There is no server in between, no database and no API key at all, which keeps the site cheap to run and easy to maintain. What has to be fetched comes from open weather data; what can be computed, is computed.Tout tourne dans le navigateur du visiteur. De achtergrond is geen decor maar een sterrenveld dat in de grafische kaart getekend wordt, met paars als enige accentkleur tegen een bijna zwarte hemel. Voor de koppen kozen we een strakke, technische letter en voor de tekst een rustige leesletter, allebei zelf meegeleverd zodat er niets van buitenaf ingeladen moet worden.The background is not decoration but a star field drawn by the graphics card, with purple as the only accent against an almost black sky. For the headings we chose a tight, technical typeface and for the body a calm reading face, both shipped with the site so nothing has to load from elsewhere.L'arrière-plan n'est pas un décor mais un champ d'étoiles dessiné par la carte graphique, avec le violet comme seule couleur d'accent sur un ciel presque noir. Het detail waar we het meest aan hebben gesleuteld is dat de achtergrond meebeweegt met de meting. Hoe zwaarder de bewolking op de gekozen plek, hoe sterker de sluier en de vervaging over het sterrenveld. Je ziet de uitkomst dus voor je ze leest. Het logo, een viertandige ster met een kleinere ster ernaast, tekenden we er zelf bij.The detail we spent the most time on is that the background moves with the measurement. The heavier the cloud cover at the chosen spot, the stronger the veil and the blur over the star field. You see the outcome before you read it. Wat we overwogen, en waarom het dit werd.What we considered, and why it became this.Ce que nous avons envisagé, et pourquoi c'est devenu ceci.
Bij elk project liggen er drie of vier wegen open, en de interessante vraag is niet welke de nieuwste is maar welke bij de opdracht past. Voor Stargazer lag de kern vast: één pagina, veel live interactie, weinig tekst en geen gebruikers om te beheren. Die vier gegevens bepaalden zowat elke technische beslissing die daarna volgde.Every project leaves three or four roads open, and the interesting question is not which one is newest but which one fits the brief. For Stargazer the core was fixed: one page, plenty of live interaction, little text and no users to manage. Those four facts drove nearly every technical decision that followed.Chaque projet laisse trois ou quatre voies ouvertes, et la vraie question n'est pas laquelle est la plus récente mais laquelle correspond à la mission. Pour Stargazer, le noyau était fixé : une page, beaucoup d'interaction en direct, peu de texte et aucun utilisateur à gérer. Ces quatre éléments ont guidé presque toutes les décisions techniques.
- Alles bij de bezoeker, geen backend. We hadden een server kunnen zetten die de data ophaalt en bewaart. Dat brengt kosten, onderhoud en een sleutel die je moet beschermen. Omdat de gekozen weerbron rechtstreeks vanuit de browser mag worden bevraagd, viel dat allemaal weg. Er is niets te beveiligen, niets dat kan uitvallen, en elke bezoeker krijgt de actuele stand in plaats van een bewaarde kopie.Everything at the visitor, no backend. We could have run a server that fetches and stores the data. That brings cost, maintenance and a key you have to protect. Because the chosen weather source may be queried straight from the browser, all of that fell away. There is nothing to secure, nothing that can go down, and every visitor gets the current state instead of a stored copy.Tout chez le visiteur, sans backend. Nous aurions pu monter un serveur qui récupère et stocke les données. Cela implique coûts, maintenance et une clé à protéger. - React en Vite in plaats van een statische generator. Voor een site die vooral tekst toont, kiezen we normaal een generator die alles vooraf opbouwt. Hier is bijna niets vooraf bekend: de score, de grafiek, de maanstand en vier interactieve hoofdstukken hangen allemaal aan de invoer van de bezoeker. Dan wint een opzet die met toestand overweg kan.React and Vite instead of a static generator. For a site that mainly shows text, we normally pick a generator that builds everything up front. Here almost nothing is known up front: the score, the graph, the moon and four interactive chapters all hang on what the visitor enters. Then a setup built for state wins.React et Vite plutôt qu'un générateur statique. Pour un site surtout textuel, nous choisissons d'ordinaire un générateur qui construit tout à l'avance. Ici presque rien n'est connu à l'avance : le score, le graphique, la lune et quatre chapitres interactifs dépendent de la saisie du visiteur. Une architecture pensée pour l'état l'emporte.
- Eén pagina in plaats van een structuur. Er is geen onderpagina die een eigen adres verdient, dus staat alles op één scherm met ankers. Dat houdt de flow ononderbroken: van vraag naar score zonder ook maar één keer opnieuw te laden.One page instead of a structure. No subpage deserves an address of its own, so everything sits on one screen with anchors. That keeps the flow unbroken: from question to score without a single reload.Une page plutôt qu'une arborescence. - Een kleine grafische bibliotheek in plaats van een grote. Het sterrenveld had met een volwaardige 3D-motor gekund, maar we tekenen enkel punten. Daarom viel de keuze op een lichte bibliotheek van een fractie van dat gewicht, wat de pagina snel houdt op een gsm met slecht bereik, precies waar iemand deze site opent.A small graphics library instead of a large one. The star field could have used a full 3D engine, but we only draw points. So we picked a light library a fraction of that weight, which keeps the page fast on a phone with poor reception, which is exactly where someone opens this site.Une petite bibliothèque graphique plutôt qu'une grande. - De maan berekenen in plaats van ophalen. Er bestaan diensten die de maanfase teruggeven, maar dan hangt een stuk van de site af van iemand anders. Fase en verlichting zijn zuivere wiskunde, dus die rekenen we zelf. Dat maakt de schuifknop mogelijk die dertig dagen terug en zestig dagen vooruit gaat, wat met een oproep per dag onbetaalbaar zou zijn.Computing the moon instead of fetching it. Services exist that return the moon phase, but then part of the site depends on someone else. Phase and illumination are pure mathematics, so we compute them ourselves. That is what makes the slider possible that runs thirty days back and sixty ahead, which would be unaffordable with one call per day.Calculer la lune plutôt que l'interroger. - Lettertypes meegeleverd, niet ingeladen. Een letter van een extern netwerk halen is één regel werk, maar het betekent een verzoek naar een derde partij bij elk bezoek en tekst die even verspringt. Wij leveren ze mee met de site: sneller, stabieler in beeld, en geen bezoeker die onderweg langs iemand anders passeert.Fonts shipped, not loaded. Pulling a typeface from an external network is one line of work, but it means a request to a third party on every visit and text that shifts for a moment. We ship them with the site: faster, steadier on screen, and no visitor routed past someone else along the way.Polices embarquées, non chargées. Récupérer une police sur un réseau externe demande une ligne, mais implique une requête vers un tiers à chaque visite et un texte qui saute brièvement. We chose local storage in the browser: the site knows your spot on a second visit, and no cookie banner is needed because nothing leaves for us.Mémoriser sans compte ni cookie. Stargazer is een conceptproject en tegelijk een volwaardig stuk werk.
